Hector's Quick Tip - Go

When mixing your aquarium fish types always consider these few points.

1. Bigger fish will sometimes eat smaller fish.

2. Some fish will need small schools (6–10), as this is their natural behaviour.

3. Some fish do best in singles, or sometimes pairs.

4. Talk with your aquatic store to have a suitable mix in your tank size.

Marine fish

Very beautiful and attractive, saltwater fish and corals are the reason many people want to keep aquarium fish. Not usually for the beginner as you need to ensure the water is clean and well maintained, also feeding may involve live and frozen fish foods over dry food.

Marine coral

If you decide you’ll like to keep corals, ensure aquarium fish numbers are very low (almost none) and you have lots of aquarium light and very clean water. Corals are living creatures, some feed off light where others feed off small organisms in the water. Talk to your marine specialist first to ensure the right set-up is purchased to suit your needs. Corals can be lovely to keep and with some practice and proper advice success is more likely.

The best set-up

A fish only tank won’t be as difficult to maintain however understanding about the individual requirements of aquarium fish types, is needed, as many won’t live together in small tanks. You may need to look at purchasing a number of other items to achieve a well-balanced marine aquarium but in the end it is well worth the effort.

While you see small marine setups around a tank around 70-100l would be the bear minimum for a simple set-up. Best advice is talk to your marine specialist and discuss the type of fish you'd like to keep, a quality store selling marine fish will know the differences and requirements. If they don't try someone else.
