Hector's Quick Tip - Go

When mixing your aquarium fish types always consider these few points.

1. Bigger fish will sometimes eat smaller fish.

2. Some fish will need small schools (6–10), as this is their natural behaviour.

3. Some fish do best in singles, or sometimes pairs.

4. Talk with your aquatic store to have a suitable mix in your tank size.

Community Fish

Peaceful types and will generally live in community tanks. Just be aware that large fish naturally eat smaller one’s so even though some of these cichlids are small they will usually grow a bit larger and may eat some of your smaller fish.

African Cichlids

African cichlids are very bright and colourful fish and will always look beautiful in your aquarium. There are many varieties, a number of which can be aggressive, but will usually live together without a lot of fuss. Generally it’s recommended that you maintain these styles together as they will eat smaller fish.

Ensure you have good filtration and perform regular partial water changes as these types of fish enjoy fresh water and tend to be a little messier. African Cichlids like to dig and change the aquarium design themselves so ensure you don’t have real plants as many will likely destroy whatever you have in the aquarium.

South American Cichlids

South American Cichlids can grow large and can be a little aggressive. Discus, Angels and a number of Dwarf Cichlids also come from South America but their temperaments are very different so always do a little research first before deciding on the styles and types of fish as there are so many to choose from. Some of these types will live happily in a Community style aquarium, while others are best to keep with similiar types.

The reason for this is the larger fish are generally able to "give as good as they get" and create an even ground. Some of these "Tank Busters" do require special treatment so talk with aquatic specialist to understand exactly what you may require.

Freshwater Oddities

While some may look a bit strange a number will be fine in a community tank, plus seeing some of these more unsual additions is quite a talking point with friends. So consider some of the more unusal types as a possible tank mate for your home aquarium.

Most new people keeping fish, get confused when people discuss tropical fish. Most believe the term "tropical fish" refers to fish found around the tropical reefs. The fish on the pages below are all freshwater tropical fish that come from lakes, rivers and streams throughout the warmers parts of the world. Like the Amazon River, various African Lakes, parts of South East Asia, Australia and Central America, all live in the warm freshwater.

Reef fish, which are more commonly called Marine Fish, all live in warm waters like Hawaii, Australia, Indonesian, parts of America and throughout our vast Oceans and Seas.

A freshwater tropical fish aquarium is simple to set-up and is easily maintained by following a few basic steps. Within this category you'll find 1000's of different species to pick from, while not all will live together happily, you'll certainly have a hard time deciding what types you want to keep. Talk with you aquatic store to ensure you get the right mix, and if possible decide before buying your aquarium. Some fish like a lot of room.
